Kent spinner James Tredwell is hoping to put the disappointment of England behind him and take wickets for Kent on a regular basis.

The 33 year old from Ashford was overlooked by England for the five match One Day International series with New Zealand despite recovering from a side strain that has seen him miss the past few weeks for Kent.

Now back to full fitness, Tredwell featured in Kent’s six wicket loss to Hampshire in the Natwest T20 Blast at Canterbury on Friday night.

Despite being back and available for England, Tredwell was overlooked with Adil Rashid given the spinner’s slot in the squad and the Kent man admits he was disappointed not to have been called up after impressing whilst on international duty over the past year or two:

“It’s been tough and I haven’t had an injury like that for a few years. Having been away and then coming back, I was looking forward to a run of games, so it was hard sitting on the side watching.”

“That’s behind me now and I just want to get on with playing for Kent.”

“I’d be very disappointed if I wasn’t considered for England and the chat I had was pretty much along those lines, but it looks like they have now gone in a different direction.”

“It’s really disappointing for me and I feel like I have performed for England for a period of time. It would have been nice to have been involved, just like Moeen Ali did in the Test series, but they are going in a different direction and playing some really good cricket.”

“Hopefully I will get a good run of cricket now and put some performances in.”

Having started their Natwest T20 Blast campaign in exciting fashion and heading the South Group, the Kent Spitfires have now lost their last two games and Tredwell admits the side didn’t play well enough with the ball in their hands against Hampshire on Friday night:

“I thought we played pretty well with the bat and posted what I thought was a pretty good score. Some days it goes like that and Vince played really well to get them over the line.”

“We could have done certain things better, but sometimes Twenty 20 goes like that.”

“It was pretty tough out in the field and it was hard to see from one side of the ground to the other, but you have to combat those things when you play at night.”

With the Essex Eagles coming to the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence on Thursday night for their next T20 fixture, Tredwell is hoping the side can get back to playing the way they did at the start of the campaign:

“We just want to play in the manner that we have played in the first few games. We have played with freedom and we don’t want to let a few defeats affect that.”

“We’ve just got to enjoy the cricket when we are out there and get back to winning ways.”

One major change this season on the field has seen Sam Northeast take over the captaincy role from Rob Key and having skippered the side himself, Tredwell told KSN how he was still getting used to having someone else in charge, but was backing the batsman totally:

“Sam has done really well and I’ve enjoyed playing under him. Having played under Keysey, he’s picked up a few mannerisms along the way, which isn’t a bad thing.”

“We’ve probably not put in the consistency of performances for him, but I think we have shown some really good things as a group.”

“Hopefully we can put together a string of performances and go through this busy part to the season in a strong way.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Davies has taken over with the gloves in the past few weeks with Sam Billings on international duty and it’s been a real baptism of fire for the Sandwich keeper, but Tredwell is one of a number at Kent that believes he has a bright future in the game:

“We have all been there, probably not quite to the same degree, but we have all had to start somewhere and maybe he has found it easier to this point playing age group cricket.”

“Generally you get to this level you have had some success and Ryan has had that at club level, with the second eleven and the England under nineteens, but this top level can be hard work at times.”

“It’s up to the coaching staff and senior players to help him through these next few weeks and bring his game on.”
