James Tredwell has been included in England’s squads for both the T20 international and first three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.
Tredwell, who has featured 47 times in all forms of the game for his country, taking 55 wickets, is set to be the first choice spinner in the squads for the single NatWest international T20, plus the first three matches of the Royal London one-day series.
The squad for the remaining two one-dayers will be announced at a later date.
The T20 international will kick off the limited-overs series at The Oval, before the sides meet in five one-day internationals at The Oval, Chester-le-Street, Old Trafford, Lord’s and Edgbaston.
Those games will be followed by two Test matches, first at Lord’s and then Headingley.
Tredwell was the pick of the bowlers as he took 4-40 in England’s 39-run Duckworth/Lewis method win against Scotland in Aberdeen in their first international of the summer last Friday.
The England squads have also seen a recall for Hampshire’s former Kent batsman Michael Carberry, while Nottinghamshire’s left-arm seamer Harry Gurney, who made his international debut in last week’s game against Scotland, is included in both.
Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali, tipped by some to be named in England’s first test team of the summer, has been left out of the ODI squad, leading some to wonder if his omission is to allow his to get more red-ball cricket under his belt. It also means that he is likely to be available for Worcestershire when they visit Kent in their County Championship game at Tunbridge Wells, starting on Sunday 25 May.
Eoin Morgan will captain the T20 side with Stuart Broad absent through injury.
Speaking about the squad announcements, National Selector, James Whitaker, said: “Playing the World T20 Champions in front of a home crowd is a hugely exciting opportunity for this squad. With Stuart currently unavailable we have chosen Eoin to lead the side and I would like to wish him and the rest of the squad all the very best.
“We are entering an important period of 50-over cricket with a World Cup less than nine months away and this series against a skilful Sri Lankan side offers a chance to regain some momentum and for players to demonstrate the skill and passion we will need if we are to be serious contenders next year in Australia and New Zealand.”
Visiting Sri Lanka are the reigning ICC World T20 champions, having won the tournament in Bangladesh in April.
They play Essex in their first warm-up game tonight, before visiting Canterbury to play Kent at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence on Friday.
