Kent spinner James Tredwell has retained his place in the England squad for the final two matches of their ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Having initially only named their squad for the first three matches of the Royal London One Day International Series, which they currently lead 2-1, England have now confirmed that the 14-man squad for the final two games will remain unchanged.
After taking 3-38 in England’s 81-run win at The Oval in the first ODI, Tredwell was unable to stop the side sliding to a heavy 157-run loss in the second game at Chester-le-Street, in which they were dismissed for 99 in their fifth-heaviest ever ODI defeat.
However, earlier today at Old Trafford, England bounced back in superb fashion, completing a 10-wicket win against the visitors, who were bowled out for just 67, with Tredwell taking fantastic figures of 2-2 from his three overs, and Sussex’s Chris Jordan taking 5-29.
The final two matches of the series see the sides meet at Lord’s on Saturday (31 May), before their final limited-overs clash at Edgbaston on Tuesday (3 June).
The squad for the two-match Test series that will follow the limited-overs fixtures is yet to be announced, and though Tredwell is performing well in limited-overs cricket for his country, he was dropped from the Kent County Championship side earlier this season, something he feels may hinder his chances of adding to his one Test cap, picked up against Bangladesh in 2010.
Speaking to KSN after Kent’s game against Sri Lanka a fortnight ago, the 32-year-old said he was happy to be working with of the England coaches regularly, but knew he had to look to earn his place back in the Kent XI too.
“Obviously with not playing four-day cricket [for Kent] it’s not helping”, he said, “but Farby [Paul Farbrace, England Assistant Coach] said to me the other day that Mooresy [Peter Moores, England Head Coach] is seeing me day in day out, so if I can impress in that regard, you just never know, but it would be nice to come back and sort this out first.”
“I think they’re trying to keep it all open” he said, with regards to who England will select as their frontline Test spinner.
“Obviously the things they have said to me have been very pleasant when I’ve been around the setup in the one-day stuff.
“They’re obviously pleased with how I’m doing things in the one-day game for them, and like I said, if I can impress in that regard and have some success – you just never know.”
