Kent skipper James Tredwell has admitted it is “disappointing” to lose Matt Coles, but admitted to having “difficulties with him” throughout the season.James Tredwell & Matt Coles

23-year-old fast bowler Coles had come through the youth ranks at Kent, but the club announced last week that he had turned down a contract offer and was looking to move elsewhere. Derbyshire have since announced that they have opened talks with him.

Speaking to KSN after Kent’s County Championship draw against Gloucestershire, Tredwell said: “It is disappointing, he’s shown great potential over his time here, but he feels as though it’s time to move on.”

Coles was sent home from the England Lions’ tour of Australia in the close season along with Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes, and Tredwell revealed that the seamer had had further disciplinary issues during the course of the 2013 season; the Maidstone-born man having also missed two weeks of this campaign due to personal reasons.

“We won’t lie”, Tredwell said, “we’ve had difficulty with him. He obviously had his stuff in the winter with the [England] Lions, and a couple more indiscretions during this summer that have been kept pretty quiet if we’re honest. Hopefully a change of scenery may give him the impetus to change the way he is and really get the best out of his ability.”

Coles, who made his Kent debut in 2009, now looks unlikely to appear for Kent in any of their remaining games this season.

Tredwell said: “He’s still available if we need him [for the rest of the season]. At this point, if he’s not going to be here next year, I think the view is that we will try and look at people that actually do want to be here.”
