Kent’s James Tredwell has been awarded an incremental contract by England for 2013-14, having become a regular feature of his country’s limited overs side.
Tredwell has earned the contract after playing three ODIs and a T20 against Australia, as well as three ODIs and three T20s against the West Indies during the current contract period.
Non-centrally contracted players like the 32-year-old off-spinner can earn an incremental contract for England by way of a points system, where five points are awarded for a Test appearance, and two for a T20 or ODI appearance. Once a player reaches 20 points during the 12-month contract period, they are automatically awarded an increment contract.
The news would seem to suggest that Tredwell’s decision to step down from the Kent captaincy at the end of the 2013 campaign to focus on his international career was the right one.
Tredwell has been at Kent for the entirity of his professional career, and is currently in Bangladesh as the frontline spinner in England’s squad for the World T20. England’s first group match of the tournament takes place against New Zealand in Chittagong on Saturday 22 March 2014.
The Ashford-born bowler will be expecting to start, having impressed in England’s two warm-up games in Bangladesh. Although both games ended in defeats for England, Tredwell has let no-one down with figures of 0-20 from his four overs in the 20-run defeat to India, and 1-23 from four overs in the 7-wicket loss against the West Indies.
