Transfer problems for the Addicks

Callum Harriott still has a year to run on his contract, but the Addicks would like to move him on.

Charlton Athletic

Guy Luzon wants to mould his own squad and needs to free up both squad places and finances.

Charlton will want a fee for Harriott but equally, the player will want a pay-off for moving before his contract has expired.

Queens Park Rangers, Huddersfield and Wolves are reportedly interested in signing the Lambeth born 21-year-old.

Reports in the Huddersfield Examiner suggest that the Terriers are not pursuing Harriott. The link is easy to establish, Huddersfield are managed by former Addicks boss, Chris Powell.

Wolves have also been linked to another Charlton wide player, Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

Many stories at this time of the year are leaked by agents to generate interest in the players they represent. If they can create competition for a player’s signature, they can negotiate a more lucrative deal for him.

Clubs will often deny any interest in a player, in an effort to keep the financial package at a lower level.

The market will not become really active until the beginning of July when out-of-contract players are free to sign for new clubs.

For the Addicks, there will be a high turnover of players this summer. As well as those already released, they are trying to move Harriott, Andre Bikey, Joe Pigott and Rhoys Wiggins on. There are probably one or two others that the club would not stand in the way of, if offers came in.

Then there are players like Gudmundsson and Joe Gomez, who are attracting attention from bigger clubs.

Until their futures are decided, it will be difficult for Charlton to know what their requirements are.

If Harriott ends up at Loftus Road, he will have Jay Emmanuel-Thomas as a teammate. Emmanuel-Thomas has been released by Bristol City, and has agreed terms with QPR.

Though he can play wide on the left, he is primarily a front runner. Emmanuel-Thomas struggled to get into City’s team last year, Steve Cotterill preferring Aaron Wilbraham in the target man role.

It is perhaps surprising that Rangers have moved for Emmanuel-Thomas, but the West Londoners may have to adopt a more prudent financial policy. He is probably being earmarked to replace Newcastle bound, Charlie Austin.

Formerly at Arseanal, Emmanuel-Thomas is a player many believed could do a job at The Valley.
