Tough weekend for Rudd in opener

It was a tough weekend for Rochester based racer Simon Rudd in the inaugural races of the newly launched Formula Four Championship.Formula Four race one

In race one the race ace finished in 17th place just under a minute behind Matt Bell who won the first ever F4 race.

Sunday saw two races including the always entertaining reverse grid race which mixes everyone up on the grid to make it more competitive.

Race two on Sunday morning was not good for Rudd at all as he didn’t finish the race having to retire after the opening lap. Jack Barlow won the race after coming from third on the grid with Seb Morris in second and Jake Dalton in third.

The final race of the weekend saw Simon produce his best finish of the weekend as he brought his Motionsport car home in 14th place. Giving him a solid platform heading into round two at his home circuit Brands Hatch during the weekend of the 18th and 19th May.

The race was won by Jake Dalton with Seb Morris on the second step for the second race in a row and Matthew Graham in third place.

The winners on Sunday were presented with their trophies by none other than Formula One’s Mark Webber.

Speaking about presenting the winners with their trophies and meeting the other F4 drivers that are taking part this season Webber said: “It’s (F4) a great little category and an ideal entry point for young drivers to develop a good feel for slicks and wings with the car moving around. And there’s a nice little paddleshift on the steering wheel too!

“You’ve got to have reliable cars at this level because it’s about the youngsters and Ralph Firman is a proven quantity. I never had the joy at that age to drive on the Grand Prix circuit so the drivers are very, very fortunate.”
