Tough weekend for Airwaves Racing
Tough weekend for Airwaves Racing

Overall it was a disappointing weekend for Wrotham based Airwaves Racing as they struggled to make an impact in rounds 4, 5 and 6 at Donington Park.Airwaves Racing3

The reverse grid race was their best performance of the weekend as Aron Smith brought his NGTC Ford home in seventh place with Mat Jackson two places further back in ninth.

The team had been hoping for a better weekend following a more successful test session after a pretty tough opening weekend at their home track of Brands Hatch.

It wasn’t to be though as both Smith and Jackson qualified down the field which meant they had a battle on their hands to score decent points.

Both drivers are in the top ten in the drivers’ championship standings with Smith in ninth place with 34 points and Jackson in tenth with thirty points.

In the team standings Airwaves Racing are in sixth place with 63 points just two behind Cicely racing in fifth with 65 points.

In race one no one was beating pole sitter Gordon Sheddon as he led from lights out to the chequered flag in a dominant race performance.

The two Airwaves Racing boys were racing each other for position and came home pretty much line astern with Smith ahead of Jackson for an 11th and 12th place finish.

In the Jack Sears Trophy in his Addison-Lee Motorbase S2000 Liam Griffin came home in 20th place just behind James Kaye who won the race, to take the opening Jack Sears Trophy victory.

Race Two saw Andrew Jordan overtake pole sitter Gordon Sheddon in the early stages and take his first race victory of the season. It will have been even more special for the youngster as it was his home track.

Smith was the more successful of the two Airwaves Racing cars in race two as he brought his Ford home in eighth place, just ahead of the veteran Colin Turkington.

Mat Jackson was to finish down in 13th place, as unfortunately he couldn’t keep hold of the places that he made up during the early stages.

In the S2000 cars it was bad luck for Liam Griffin as he was forced out of the race with mechanical issues, which seemed to be a theme for the Jack Sears competitors throughout race two. Lea Wood was the man to pick up the win in this class.

Race three is the most entertaining of all the races as it is the reverse place grid, which always guarantees entertainment.

Tom Onslow-Cole was drawn out of the hat as the man to sit on pole position for Tony Gilham’s Dartford based racing team.

It was however Colin Turkington who got the drop on Onslow-Cole on the start line, and he disappeared into the distance to take his first win of the season.

Up until the final lap it looked as though Sam Tordoff would be on the podium in second place, but a mistake let through both Sheddon and Matt Neal to take the final two podium places.

For a while it looked as though Smith in the Airwaves racing car would be challenging for a place in the top five but he slowly dropped back through the field and came home a respectable seventh place. He was just a place behind pole sitter Onslow-Cole who finished in sixth, with Jackson in ninth place.

Unfortunately Griffin in the Jack Sears Trophy was to retire and it means a disappointing end to the race weekend that started promisingly.

Following the races this weekend Aron Smith along with a number of other drivers were issued with two penalty points and an official reprimand, relating to driving standards.

The British Touring Car Championships continues over the May Day bank holiday weekend as they head to Thruxton for round three of the season.
