With one eye on the weather, Welling United will set of for the English Riviera to take on Torquay United.
Already postponed twice, one with plenty of notice as the Gulls were involved in the F.A. Trophy and the other called off on the morning of the game, the clubs will be hoping for third time lucky this time around.
Although the local referee’s decision meant the Welling team avoided travelling, some supporters had already set off and were left to find alternative entertainment in Devon.
Both clubs are fighting the drop from the Vanarama National Division so a tense game is anticipated.
Problems with goalscoring combined with only having kept three league clean sheets have left Welling struggling to pick up points and without a win since defeating Lincoln City in early October.
That was not evident for the first half an hour against Wrexham on Saturday, however, as they were the better team but then they conceded against the run of play and found themselves up against it.
Had they gone in at the break just one down, they may have felt that they still had a chance attacking the road end in the second half however, a disappointing refereeing decision put paid to that. There seemed nothing wrong with Ian Gayle’s challenge on Rob Evans but the official thought otherwise and pointed to the penalty spot. Wrexham converted and the game was all but over.
Frost is still juggling his squad in the hope of finding the winning formula. On Saturday, Ade Yusuff was given the central striker starting place before Tomi Adeloye came on for his Welling debut in the second period.
He does feel his squad is top heavy, however. “The squad’s too big. I don’t like too many people around the place. I think, potentially it can have an adverse effect off the pitch. Too many people lingering about. Too many people talking to one another disappointed they’re not playing.
“I want, and I’ve said to them, I want people, a squad of sixteen that are named and the eleven, to give everything they’ve got for me, for you (supporters), for the club. I said it to them (the players) ‘why does Barney Williams keep getting man of the match every week?’ It’s because he does the right things. He gives everything he’s got, He’s got a great attitude and I’m going to question how many are the same as Barney.”
Whilst Torquay are bottom of the league at present, they come into the game on the back of two morale boosting away victories. Last Tuesday, the won at Macclesfield to take them into the F.A. Trophy quarter finals then on Saturday, they beat Boreham Wood 1-0 courtesy of a goal from new signing Nathan Blissett.
That backs up Frost’s view that one win can give the players the belief to build upon it and where better to start than at Plainmoor in the crunch match.
