Welling United were beaten soundly by Torquay United on a difficult midweek match in Devon.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Ryan Bowman and Thomas Cruise both had early sighters for the Gulls as they started strongly and Welling had created little when they fell behind in the 15th minute.

Coutney Cameron slipped through an inch perfect ball that Bowman collected and went round Lee Butcher in one movement giving him a simple finish.

Ashley Yeoman then headed over before having a shot beaten out by Butcher. Louis Briscoe followed up but his effort was blocked by Chris Bush and Bowman was unable to finish at the far post.

Luke Young tested Lee Butcher with a free kick that he did well to tip over before referee Richard Martin awarded Torquay a very harsh penalty. Cameron was perceived to have been fouled by Loui Fazakerley and the Torquay wide man converted emphatically.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

The Wings put up a better showing in the second half and Joe Healy came close early on.

Chris Bush was booked for a foul and Bowman should have done better with Cameron’s free kick but Tyrone Marsh and Harry Beautyman both had chances for the Wings as the teams traded openings.

Butcher had to make a save at the near post from Yeoman who met another Cameron cross.

Mr Martin then refused Welling a pretty clear cut penalty shout when Afolabi Obafemi’s shot was handled in the area, and the Welling striker then combined with Marsh to give Beautyman another shot that was well saved by Martin Rice.

Rod Young shot wide and Loui Fazakerley came close when his effort came back off the near post.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Defensive frailties then proved to be Welling’s undoing as Toby Ajala, who didn’t notch for the Wings, took advantage to flick home a third.

Jake Gallagher had another good shout for a penalty when his shot appeared to come of a Torquay arm.

Healy headed wide and Bush had a drive deflected over as Welling searched for a consolation goal but it wasn’t to be.
