Mike Conway finished ninth in the second race of the Shell & Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston at the weekend.
The ninth place in race two somewhat made up for the disappointment from a promising permission in race one on Saturday.
Brake issues in race one saw him drop from sixth place and eventually ended his race although he came home in 16th it could have been so much better for the 30-year-old.
During qualifying in the morning, which was rescheduled from Friday, Conway was able to put his No. 18 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Honda 13th on the grid. He started 11th after penalties were assessed to other drivers for unauthorized engine changes.
Mike showed the talents that he had when the IndyCar commenced the race for only the second time with standing starts. Moving his way to the top-10 after 14 laps, he made his first stop on lap 22. Conway re-joined the race in 17th and started to make some great passes. He made one final stop and was looking to at least have a top-six finish with 18 laps to go.
He then started to get problems with his brakes and with four laps to go narrowly missed the tyres. He was able to keep his engine running but by the time he re-joined the field he was back in 16th.
Race two was far better for Conway as he went on to finish in the top ten after an impressive driver from the Kent man.
With qualifying being cancelled this morning because of the track being determined “undriveable” due to standing water, the starting grid was set by entrant points. Conway therefore started 16th and by the time the race came round, the weather had gone from cold and wet, to warm and sunny.
At the start of the race, the talented Brit was able to make a couple of places up and by lap 28 he was running inside the top-10. However struggling with getting his No. 18 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Honda up to temperature meant the numerous restarts made it hard to overtake. Conway drove a smart and patient race and spent the majority of the race in 10th until the final lap where he managed to avoid a huge and very scary accident moving him to ninth.
Giving his thoughts after the race, Mike said: “We improved the car a bit from yesterday which was good. We really struggled on the restarts trying to get temperature into things so I couldn’t really do anything other than hold back and keep out of trouble. It’s been a tough weekend so I am happy to finish ninth but it’s a shame it was my last IndyCar race for a while.”
In the seven IndyCar events the 30-year-old has done this year, he has secured a win, two podiums, and three top-10 finishes. He picked up 22 points for his tenth place and sits 23rd in the championship with 185 points.
With no more IndyCar races for the rest of the season for Conway he will return to the World Endurance Championship for the 6 Hours of Fuji, over the weekend of the 19th and 20th October.
