Canterbury City return to SCEFL league action on Saturday when they travel to Chipstead in Surrey to take on Tooting Bec.
Although the Bec, like City, have also had a mixed start to the season they have fared a bit better than us with four wins, two draws and four defeats so far which currently puts them five points and three places above City but now having played two games more following a midweek defeat at Lewisham Borough.
Last season, Bec were the ‘unlucky’ losers in the play-offs, as despite having finished second in the table – albeit eight points adrift of champions Snodland and getting through the semi-final with a win on penalties against Larkfield & New Hythe, they eventually lost the final to Lydd Town.
This time a penalty shootout went against them 4-5 after the game had ended 1-1 – a situation that wasn’t helped by a late switch of venue, when they were forced to concede home advantage to the Lydders when their ground at Chipstead became unavailable.
In front of a raucous and bumper crowd of 241, Lydd took full benefit of the switch, gaining promotion to the SCEFL Premier Division and Step 5 for the first time in their history – and that is definitely the last mention of the ‘P’ word!!
Bec were only founded a couple of years before City reformed in 2007 and currently play their home games at High Road the home of Isthmian League South Central side Chipstead FC.
Despite having played both Tooting & Mitcham United and Tooting & Mitcham Wanderers in the FA Cup, Trophy or Vase, City have yet to face Tooting Bec.
Tooting Bec versus Canterbury City in the SCEFL Forst Division will be played on Saturday 30th September with a kick-off of 3pm at:
The NRT Stadium, High Road, Chipstead, Surrey, CR5 3S
