Tonbridge and Chelmsford came into this game lacking in confidence, Chelmsford losing their last three games while Tonbridge have lost their last four games and hadn’t scored for 423 minutes. So it was almost inevitable the game would finish in a draw.
The game started with both sides giving the ball away, showing everyone why they were struggling at the bottom of the table then Tonbridge sprung into action, in the 12th minute a loose pass across the area went straight to Ricky Modeste and from 15 yards his shot went past the post.
Four minutes later Tom Beere from 25 yards saw his free kick go over the bar. In the 18th minute a Tonbridge free kick into the area saw James Dillon come out to punch clear but it went back wards towards goal, was headed over the bar by Michael Spillane for a corner.
Four minutes later against the run of play Chelmsford nearly took the lead when a corner into the 6 yard box was headed powerfully by Cameron James but came back of the cross bar then in the next minute Tonbridge took a deserved lead when a James Fielding cross into the area saw Joe Turner 6 yards out back flick his header over Dillon, this was their first goal for 446 minutes but what a wait.
This seemed to galvanise Chelmsford as they dominated possession and had one glorious chance when in the 39th minute Chez Isaac saw his shot from 16 yards go over the bar.
In the 41st minute in a rare Tonbridge attack Aaron Smith-Joseph on the left crossed to the near post where Tom Wood was, his header under pressure went just past the post.
The second half saw Chelmsford enjoy a lot of possession and in the 48th minute a cross to the back post saw Tom Wraight’s header go over the bar.
Five minutes late Spillane tried his luck from the edge of the area but Jon Henly saved it. In the 61st minute Chelmsford equalised when a Henly free kick was cleared back towards the Tonbridge goal where a shot was blocked but came out to Simeon Jackson who from 15 yards slotted the ball home.
The game was now on an knife edge as both sides tried to get a winner but in reality both defences held firm, in the 4th minute off added on time a Henly long clearance fell at Jake Hutchinson feet, he ran on and his shot went just over the bar, the final Whistle went and a draw was probably the right result.
