Tonbridge Angels 0-1 Welling United
Tonbridge Angels 0-1 Welling United

Just over thirteen hundred spectators were present at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium when Tonbridge Angels entertained Welling United on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Over the course of the weekend, emotions were vert different for the supporters of the two clubs. Jay Saunders’ Angels failed to gain a point or even score a goal while the Wings won twice to pick up their first points of the season.

There was an early Welling appeal for a penalty when Jephte Tanga was brought down however it was deemed to be outside the area. James Vaughan delivered the free kick but it was just too high for Dominic Odusanya who was unable to get a header on target.

Antony Papadopoulos had a shot saved comfortably by Jonathan Henly. His next effort caused greater problems, though, and Henly made an excellent save.

In the eighteenth minute, Welling went ahead. Vaughan delivered a corner to the far post and Jack Burchell rose to head home.

Tanga had a shot deflected over before Welling should have gone two up. Tanga was brought down on the edge of the penalty and Papadopoulos hit a low free kick that Henly got down well to keep out. Lewis White was first to the rebound but was off balance and could only force the rebound wide.

As half time approached, the hosts had their first real chance when Stefan Payne held off his man before being thwarted by an excellent save by Ben Winterbottom.

After the break, the Angels looked livelier and forced the Welling defence to work harder. Lewis Gard crossed for Ruben Soares-Junior who headed over before the Wings had a half chance when Papadopoulos’ shot took a deflection and was saved.

Payne again used his guile and strength to make an opening for himself against his former club but shot straight at Winterbottom.

Once more, Papadopoulos tried his luck from outside the penalty area only for Henly to get down well to push it around the post. Vaughan delivered the subsequent corner deep, but Crossley Lema was unable to hit the target with his header.

Jamie Fielding hooked over from a corner by Joe Turner for the Angels as they started to enjoy more of the possession. However, they struggled to break down the Welling defence and were reduced to long range shots and hopeful crosses. Jordan Higgs fired well over but it was Welling, on the break, who looked the most dangerous.

Seventeen year old David Kamara burst through but couldn’t get a shot away then Kain Adom went past Fielding and tried to slot it home when a square pass would have set up a tap in for one of two Welling players who had followed up.

Tariq Hinds had a late effort for Tonbridge but it flew well over.

Both teams are now on six points but Welling will be the happier after two wins on the bounce as opposed to Tonbridge who have only scored three times this season.
