It was Bromley that progressed to the next round of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup winning 1-0 at Tonbridge Angels.
Tonbridge came into this game having to play some fringe and academy players due to a long injury list and then having to play against Bromley two divisions higher was a big ask but overall they performed well but Bromley deserved to go through to the quarter finals.
The game was played at a slower pace than probably league games but both sides showed willingness to win the game, the first real chance went Tonbridge’s way when Tommy Whitnell on the right saw his cross into the area find Nathan Elder but from 8 yards and on his own his header went straight at Alan Julian.
Five minutes later it was Bromley’s turn when Oluwatobi Sho-Silver got onto a ball in the ball in the area and from an angle Anthony Di-Bernado tipped it over the bar.
In the 19th minute Tonbridge thought they had scored when Damien Scannell on the left cut inside and his shot from 20 yards was deflected and looked as if it was going in but Julian was able to get to it and push it around the post.
Tonbridge had another half chance in the 25th minute when Scannell’s cross from the right was deflected into the path of Whitnell and his overhead effort from 15 yards went past the post.
Bromley started to gain control of the game as in the 31st minute Jordan Higgs saw his 20 yard shot get deflected for a corner then in the 37th minute former Angel Lee Minshull saw his shot saved by Di-Bernardo.
In the 41st minute Bromley took the lead when a ball into the area found Sho-Silver and from 6 yards he smashed it into the back of the net. Two minutes later Blair Turgott saw his effort from 20 yards tipped over the bar by Di-Bernardo.
The second half started with Tonbridge having a bit of possession although Bromley on the break looked dangerous, in the 52nd Elder on the edge of the area saw his effort get deflected for a corner then four minutes later a cross into the six yard box saw Elder’s header go wide.
Bromley had their first real chance in the 68th minute when Turgott and Higgs combined leaving Higgs in the area with only De-Bernardo to beat but his lob went over the bar.
In the 74th minute Dave Martin ran from halfway to the edge of the area before shooting forcing De-Bernado to save but the rebound was whizzed across the area with no one able to get a foot on it.
Two minutes later James Philpott latched onto a long ball into the area and his shot from an acute angle was tipped over the bar.
Tonbridge nearly got an equaliser which could have forced extra time when a ball into the area found Corey Watts on his own 10 yards out but he headed goal wards but Julian saved easily.
The final whistle went and the Tonbridge spectators should be proud of the effort the youngsters put in and they were not embarrassed whilst Bromley will take confidence into their game Saturday with a clean sheet and a win.
