Kent driver Laura Tillett is looking forward to the next few weeks after securing a drive in the MRF Challenge over in Qatar, Bahrain and India.
The 23 year old has recently quit her job with Caterham to concentrate on her racing career and has jetted out to Qatar to take her place in the grid in the MRF Challenge.
With so much determination to get back racing after months out of a car, Tillett told Kent Sports News how she is keen to get some laps under her belt in the coming weeks with a view to securing a deal next year:
“I’m in Qatar for the First Round of the MRF Challenge which is a very complicated circuit, so it will be interesting to see how I get on there.”
“I then go on to the next round over in Bahrain and then over to India. It’s a really good Championship and is really well run. It’s really competitive, so will hopefully get me up for next season in 2015.”
“I left Caterham so I was able to do more testing and be in a car more. With this opportunity in the MRF, hopefully that will sort me out for the next year.”
“I’m very competitive and really push myself, so I will make that I’m fast!”
Last week Tillett was back behind the wheel of a kart as she competed in the Henry Surtees Foundation Challange at Buckmore Park.
With a packed grid and horrendous driving conditions in the morning, Tillett told KSN how she was glad to get a chance to support the charity with legend John Surtees having put on another great day in memory of his son Henry who tragically died at Brands Hatch in July 2009:
“I turned into a prune throughout the day, but just about dried out for the last race. It was very difficult and the conditions weren’t ideal and I think if it was just a normal race, they would have called it off.”
“Saying that, it was great fun and everyone was in the same position. It is always the same with karting, you need to have a good kart.”
“I was very happy that I made the A Final as I didn’t think I would. After that I was happy competing with the people in it as they were so competitive as there were some big names out there.”
“A lot of us raced with Henry, so it was great to have a day of racing for Henry. We will all happily do it every year as John Surtees puts on a great event and it keeps the memory of Henry alive.”
A few weeks ago Tillett signed to sports management agency Purple Parrot as she looks to ultimately achieve her aim of driving in Formula One and the Kent driver told KSN how she was pleased to have a great support network behind her:
“Purple Parrot are great, they’re really determined, really interested in my racing and pushing me forward. Hopefully they will get me something for next year and keep me racing.
“It would be lovely to have a girl in Formula One and I’d love it to be me!”
