If a week is a long time in politics, its doubtful that Mead boss Terry Spillane can know four days as different as the last four.
Frustrated and annoyed at his side’s failing to beat 10 man Wroxham at the weekend, the boss could only look on in absolute delight and wonder as his side not only took the division’s only 100 percent home record – they totally destroyed it as three second half goals saw the Mead record their biggest away win of the season as the boys in green completed the League double over Mark Stimson’s Thurrock.
The game though wasn’t without its scares for the Mead as the home side flew out of the blocks and in the first minute the visitors were indebted to a fabulous Andy Walker save to keep the score line blank. Spillane made two changes to his starting eleven from the weekend with club captain Derek Duncan starting his first game since September 7th, and with Aaron Jeffrey starting up front in place of Michael Uwezu, and both responded with great performances in a stunning team display.
And it was the Mead who took the lead when Jeffrey was brought down on the very edge of the box and despite vehement Thurrock protests, the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Richard Butler and he coolly sent the keeper the wrong way to score.
The home side upped the tempo and the Mead goal led a charmed life as the goal’s frame was struck on three different occasions and Jack Barry was on hand another home chance off the line. But literally on the stroke of half time, the home side deservedly levelled through Hall prompting swift rethinks of both half time team talks.
What happened after the break left the Mead supporters in the crowd delighted, and left the former Gills boss shaking his head in disbelief!
Barry was the unlikely scorer of the visitors second goal, as after picking the ball up on half way, he weaved his way through to the edge of the box before finding Butler with a great touch. His first time cross was nodded back across goal by Jeffrey for Barry who steered a sublime header into the net.
Two became three when Jay Porter crossed from the left for Tyrus Gordon-Young netted his eighth goal of the season, before Ibrahim Kargbo advanced to curl home a majestic effort from 25 yards beyond the keepers despairing dive!
The night was summed by for Stimson’s side when they blazed a late penalty high and wide as otherwise the Mead saw out the dying stages without further incident which made the trip back across the Dartford Bridge just for a change a delight as the boys now turn their attention to a weekend of Cup football starting with a Kent derby with Ramsgate the visitors to the SCT on Friday night in the FA Carlsberg Trophy.
