Three Bridges v Cray Wanderers preview

Fresh from being crowned as Bostik South East champions, Cray Wanderers visit Three Bridges as they look to finish their last three matches in style.

Hosts, Three Bridges need one more win to guarantee safety in their remaining three games but there would have to be an incredible run of results to send them down.

After spending the entire season at the top of the league, Cray have limped over the finishing line, and secured the title last weekend with a three-one victory over Ashford United. Up until mid-March they had only lost one league game all season but away defeats at Hastings United and Whitstable Town, along with draws at home with Haywards Heath Town and Greenwich Borough, delayed their crowning.

However, the inevitable happened last Saturday with their defeat of Ashford. Tom Carlse was tumbled in the penalty area and Joe Taylor stepped up to fire them into the lead from the spot just after the half hour mark.

Four minutes before the break they gave themselves some breathing space when Mitchell Nelson headed home from close range as he got on the end of Karl Dent’s corner. After the interval, it got even harder for Ashford when Lee Prescott was sent off but they were still able to pull one back through Danny Parish to set up a nervy finish.

Carlse settled matters, against his former club, when crashing home from close range with three minutes remaining and it wasn’t long until the party started.

Sussex based Three Bridges have only won twice in fifteen games played in 2019, both two-nil home victories in March when they defeated Greenwich Borough and Phoenix Sports. Last Saturday they were defeated three-nil at Faversham Town and they will be keen to put that result behind them.

When the two clubs met in January, it took ninety-six minutes for Cray to make the break-through even though Three Bridges had Connor French sent off with twenty regulation minutes remaining. Archie Johnson scored the crucial goal with a low drive from twenty yards.
