Third place for Field and Scotland

Holcombe’s Rob Field and Scotland finished third at the EuroHockey Championship Qualifier A event in Vienna, Austria, after beating Portugal 10-2 in their final match yesterday.

Scotland reached the semi-finals with a 10-2 last-eight win against Croatia in match two of the tournament with goals from Struan Walker (2), Cameron Golden (2), Jamie Golden (2), Thomas Austin, Andrew Lochrin, Lee Morton and Andrew McConnell.

That win set up a semi-final tie with Ukraine who knocked out Lithuania with an 8-0 win, with Portugal and hosts Austria progressing to the last-four from the other side of the bracket.

Portugal progressed via a 4-3 shootout victory over Switzerland after a 1-1 draw, while Austria beat Hungary 24-0.

Scotland, despite dominating for long spells of their last-four clash on Saturday, were beaten 1-0 by Ukraine to end their hopes of qualifying for next year’s EuroHockey Championship in Germany, with hosts Austria also reaching the final courtesy of a 3-1 win over Portugal.

In the ranking matches on Friday, Croatia beat Lithuania 4-1 while Switzerland ran out 13-0 victors with Hungary.

Jonny Caren’s side responded, though, to beat Portugal 10-2 to seal third in the final match of the event, with Walker netting four more alongside goals from Cameron Golden (2), Keir Robb (2), Ali Douglas and Jamie Golden.

Lithuania beat Hungary 7-2 to finish seventh, with Switzerland beating Croatia 3-1 for fifth.

In the final, hosts Austria beat Ukraine 3-1 to secure their ticket to next year’s Championships.
