For the first time this season there’s a full schedule of football across all levels of non-league this weekend.
The opening weekend of the recently renamed Bostik Leagues is this weekend meaning all of the county’s sides are back in action.
Starting in the National League, Ebbsfleet United are third in the table after two matches as a result of their 2-0 win over Maidstone in midweek. They’ll face another big spending, newly promoted team on Saturday when they welcome AFC Fylde to Stonebridge Road.
Bromley are the only other Kent side who still have an unbeaten record in the top level of non-league but that will be put to the test when they travel to Macclesfield. Neil Smith’s side drew at Hayes Lane against Eastleigh before making the short trip to Dover where they recorded a 2-1 win. Their trip is one of seven matches being covered by KSn this weekend.
The losers in that matchup at Crabble, Dover Athletic, host Wrexham. The Whites just missed out on a playoff spot last season and, after a major shakeup of the squad, Chris Kinnear will be looking to work his magic again this year.
The final game in the National League this weekend comes from Leyton Orient when Maidstone travel into the capital. Jay Sounders’ team will be looking for their first win of the season on Saturday after drawing against Maidenhead last week and losing to Ebbsfleet on Tuesday night.
It’s been a tough opening seven days for both sides in the National League South. Dartford have picked up two points from their opening games. Last weekend they got a point at home against Hungerford before making the short trip to Braintree to draw 2-2 there. They travel to Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday looking for their first win of 2017-2018.
Still looking for their first point of the year are Welling United. After losing out in a tough game at Truro last weekend they were also unsuccessful at home against Chelmsford. They face Bognor Regis Town at Park View Road in a game which they could potentially get their first points of the season in another match being watched by KSN.
There are also a number of Kent sides preparing for their first game of the new year this weekend. With the Bostik Leagues starting this weekend there are plenty of clubs looking forward to starting fresh from 2016-2017.
In the Premier we’ll watch Tonbridge Angels, the only Kent side at home in the league, when they face Hendon at Longmead. It’s been a busy week in Tonbridge where they’ve brought in goalkeeper Jonny Henly after Anthony Di Benardo was released this week.
Elsewhere Folkestone Invicta travel to Enfield Town whilst Margate go to Thurrock with a new look team after their relegation last season from the National League South.
The big story coming from the fourth tier of the non-league pyramid in the South east is Ashford United’s first match at that level since their reformation in 2011. We’ll be there to watch them host Carshalton Athletic at Homelands on Saturday afternoon.
Hythe Town are also at home on Saturday for the visit of Walton Casuals and we’ll be reporting from there to see if they can look forward another playoff campaign this season. There’s a Kent Derby in the southern portion of the league when Faversham Town travel to VCD Athletic. Ramsgate will also welcome Phoenix Sports whilst Lewes travel east to face Herne Bay, Sittingbourne make the trip to Chipstead and Cray face Thamesmead in another all- Kent opening day matchup in our final match report of the weekend.
