The last football Saturday of 2018 sees another list of potential classic encounters.
We start at Priestfield where the Gills will be looking to build on Boxing Day’s amazing win over League One leaders Portsmouth against a Doncaster Rovers side with a couple of familiar faces in the opposition ranks.
Both John Marquis (who had a spell on loan at the club in 2015 where he netted eight times in 21 games under Martin Allen) and former Hythe Town hitman Alfie May are likely to feature for the visitors whilst the Gills will reassess the fitness of top scorer Tom Eaves before kick off – the game at the Keepmoat Stadium earlier in the season finished 3-3; what odds a repeat score at the weekend?
In the National League, manager less Maidstone United go to Boreham Wood looking for anything they can get following Harry Wheeler’s untimely departure. League leaders Leyton Orient are at Crabble looking to halt Dover’s charge that has seen them climb out of the bottom four since Andy Hessenthaler’s return.
Ebbsfleet United meanwhile welcome Hessenthaler’s old side – Eastleigh – to Stonebridge Hill with Garry Hill’s side looking to leapfrog their visitors into the top ten with the Fleets fourth win in five, whilst Neil Smith’s Bromley make the trip to Hampshire looking for the points to keep his side above their hosts at the wrong end of the table – Havant & Waterlooville.
In National League South, there’s the massively mouth-watering clash between third and fourth with both Welling and Concord Rangers looking for the three points to keep them in touch with top two Torquay and Woking, whilst Dartford make the short trip through the tunnel to face an East Thurrock United who are currently just one off of the foot of the table.
Into the BOSTIK League and there are derbies everywhere you look.
In the Premier, Tonbridge Angels will be looking to rebound from their home defeat to Folkestone Invicta as they end 2018 on the artificial surface at Carshalton Athletic.
Meanwhile in the South East, we’ve six games and six derbies. Leaders Cray Wanderers play their first Christmas game as they head for Greatness Park to face Micky Collins’ Sevenoaks Town. Elsewhere, Scott Porter returns to Reachfields for the first time since leaving Hythe Town with his new Whitstable charges who will be looking to build on their Boxing Day win over Ramsgate who welcome Faversham Town to Southwood – both sides with new bosses still both looking for their first wins. Talking of first wins and Herne Bay enjoyed their first home win of the season last weekend and this week, head to Woodstock Park to face Sittingbourne.
The final match of the weekend is at 2.00pm on Sunday when Phoenix Sports welcome VCD Athletic.
In the SCEFL, leaders Fisher go to Faversham to face Canterbury; second placed Beckenham Town are at Croydon in the early kick off; Corinthian in third welcome Punjab United to Gay Dawn whilst there is a Medway derby for fourth placed Chatham Town, with Lordswood.
