Footballers evoke emotions amongst fans, that often have little to do with their ability. Some are firm crowd favourites come what may, whilst others can be universally disliked for no logical reason.
Then there are players who sit somewhere in the middle. Neither popular nor unpopular, these players tend to be largely taken for granted.
One such player at Charlton is Jake Forster-Caskey. The 23-year-old former Brighton midfielder has a real football pedigree.
He is the son of former Tottenham midfielder Darren Caskey, and the stepson of much travelled striker Nicky Forster.
Viewed by fans as very much the junior partner of Ahmed Kashi in Charlton’s deep lying midfield pairing, Forster-Caskey is a gifted technical player.
Many believe Joe Aribo should be in the team ahead of Forster-Caskey, but the stats do not back up that theory.
A like-for-like comparison reveals that Forster-Caskey covers considerably more ground than Aribo, and the Addicks give the ball away far less in their defensive third when Forster-Caskey plays.
Kashi has caught the eye with a couple of spectacular goals recently, but Forster-Caskey has weighed in with five of his own this season.
He is unlikely to ever be a Player Of The Year contender, but his contribution to the team is vital and appreciated by his manager.
Forster-Caskey is one of the first names on Karl Robinson’s team sheet.
