There are eleven SCEFL names in the draw for the Second Round of the FA Vase after a busy weekend of Cup action for our teams.
We were guaranteed five of them due to the First Round draw pitting our own teams against each other but those games still had to be decided and they ended up producing some top class drama and plenty of goals.
First Division side Kennington put in a stunning performance in their biggest ever game as they saw off Crowborough Athletic 4-2 at Homelands. Tom Scorer grabbed a quickfire first half double to set the hosts on the way and they never looked back despite the Crows attempts to get back in the game.
Welling Town were also impressive as they scored some eye-catching goals in a 5-1 win over Erith & Belvedere.
Jhoan Tabima launched a 35 yard effort in off the bar to get the ball rolling with Adam O’Neill, Elyon Marshall-Katung, Carl Oblitey and Luis Montoya all getting in on the action before the game was done.
Corinthian deservedly have their name in the hat as they returned from Holm Park as winners due to a 2-0 victory over Sheppey United.
The hosts have a extensive injury list and their much-changed team were no competition for the Hoops, who grabbed a goal in each half to make their way through.
Fisher have struggled of late but you would never have noticed on Saturday as they returned to form to defeat Greenwich Borough 3-0 in South London. Jamie Brown claimed a brace in that one after Luke With had got the game’s opener.
Glebe were the only SCEFL side to knock out ‘foreign’ opposition as they beat Peacehaven & Telscombe FC 5-3 in a classic on the coast. Jesse Darko and Jamie Philpot have both been in sparkling form for the Foxes and they were both on target again as Gary Alexander’s men racked up the goals in an entertaining game.
The top two Premier Division sides could not be split in their FA Vase tie as Chatham Town and Beckenham Town drew 1-1 at the Bauvill Stadium.
A fortunate opener from Byron Walker was followed by a late Malik Nosike leveller as Beckenham rescued the tie to set up a replay at Eden Park Avenue on Wednesday.
That same night Tunbridge Wells will bid to make the next round after they were denied that opportunity due to an injury time equaliser from Southall.
Wells were looking good for the win throughout the game but despite Jason Thompson’s brace the hosts kept coming back, eventually leading to a 4-4 draw.
Deal Town saw their game at Westside FC postponed because of the weather and now will now get their chance to take the field on Tuesday evening.
Canterbury City and Bearsted will enter the competition at the second round stage due to their success in the FA Vase last year.
In League action we saw three Premier Division games with Canterbury City, Lordswood and K Sports all getting wins.
Canterbury are now sitting comfortably in 4th place after they were 3-0 winners at Hollands & Blair. A Charlie Dickens double included a goal of the season contender while Liam King wrapped the game up from the spot late on.
Felix Ogeah netted the winner for Lordswood as they returned from Bearsted with the points while Matt Gething was the Man of the Match for K Sports as they saw off AFC Croydon 3-1.
In the First Division Holmesdale moved up to second place with a 2-0 home win over Greenways.
The Dale are unbeaten in the last 5 league games and are sure to be one of the teams competing for a coveted top four place as the season continues.
Sutton Athletic continued their progression with a 3-1 win over Forest Hill Park and Rochester United edged past Lydd Town 2-1 but Croydon will feel like they dropped points as they could only draw 2-2 at home to struggling Meridian VP.
In the SCEFL Challenge Cup Bridon Ropes forgot they were bottom of the league for a day as they outclassed Kent Football United 7-0 with both Liam Donaldson and Nathan Simpson claiming hat-tricks as their side easily booked a place in round three.
The next week is all about further Cup competitions for our SCEFL sides. Aswell as the FA Vase replays in midweek we have 5 Challenge Cup games that all match teams from the two different Divisions against each other.
Then we go to Saturday and the Kent FA Senior Trophy with 15 ties to look foward to as that competition gets underway.
