Doyle would have been an an able deputy for Josh Magennis. Among Doyle’s clubs at youth level was Crumlin United, who the Addicks played on their pre-season trip to Ireland.
Doyle has played for Hibernian, Chesterfield, Cardiff and Preston since crossing the Irish Sea in 2011.
He is now surplus to requirements at Deepdale and had a loan spell at Portsmouth last season, before another loan move took him to Boundary Park on Thursday.
Not a prolific scorer, his most productive period was when he was with Chesterfield. He scored 32 goals in 69 appearances for the Spireites.
Solid rather than spectacular, he is not the type of player that will have fans on the edge of their seats, like Joe Dodoo will.
Ironically, both players took advantage of defensive slips to score debut goals for their new clubs on Saturday.
Doyle cashed in when Patrick Bauer and Jason Pearce both went for the same ball. The error let Doyle in to level things up for Oldham.
Dodoo restored Charlton’s two goal cushion when he latched onto an under strength back header and fired home.
It will be interesting to see how things pan out for Doyle at Boundary Park.
