Charlton’s barely flickering survival hopes may finally be extinguished at Bolton on Tuesday evening.
The Addicks are currently 11 points adrift of safety with just 4 games to go. Anything other than a win on Tuesday will mathematically confirm what the fans have known for weeks, that they will be watching their team in League One next season.
The staffing structure behind the scenes – as well as the playing personnel – will be very different come August.
Lennie Lawrence is believed to be wanted as Director of Football, and the iconic 68-year-old is thought to be keen to return to the club where he made is name.
David Burke and Keith Burt are the front runners to head up the club’s recruitment section.
The appointments will give Charlton a strong hand as they look to build a more British based squad for the next campaign.
The Lawrence story appears to have unsettled head coach Jose Riga though. Here is what he said after the Derby game on Saturday:
“We have to have a good discussion (with the owner) because everyone knows I appreciate the place and the club – there is passion everywhere.
“It won’t be a problem for me to build a team, I’ve done it before, but we have to be real and see the way we want to build, and also which kind of responsibilities I’ll have.”
Riga does not normally stay at a club for very long, and it would be no surprise if the Addicks are again looking for a new head coach in the near future.
Much wanted teenage prodigy, Ademola Lookman, was awarded the Championship Apprentice Of The Year trophy at the Football League awards dinner in Manchester on Sunday evening.
Lookman is hot property and attracting interest from a host of Premier League clubs.
