The importance of team spirit

One of the more pleasing aspects of Charlton’s current good form is their ability to bounce back from adversity.

The first goal is normally crucial in professional football, but in the last two games at The Valley the Addicks have recovered from going behind to take all three points.

Charlton have had to show grit and determination to win their last two away games as well.

They were pegged back at Southend after taking the lead, but won the game at the death thanks to a thumping header from Krystian Bielik.

Lee Bowyer’s side were subjected to heavy second half pressure at Bradford after Karlan Grant had given them an early lead.

The Addicks stood up to the onslaught doggedly, then sealed the game late on thanks to Lyle Taylor’s stunning strike.

There is a real togetherness about the current squad, and Bowyer took them paintballing at Sidcup on Monday to further enhance the bonding process.

‎That togetherness is a vital ingredient for any successful side as Bowyer’s assistant, Johnnie Jackson, stressed on Monday:

“It’s invaluable. All the good sides I’ve played in, ask all the lads about the teams they had success with, they’ve always had that spirit, camaraderie.

“It could be worth a lot of points at the end of the season.

“When you do go behind, knowing that your mates are willing to run that little bit further for you and leave it all out on the pitch, stuff like that make a difference,”‎ said Jackson.

Charlton’s victory over Plymouth was their fourth‎ win on the bounce, a feat they last achieved in the 2011/12 promotion season.

They face a tough task if they are to extend that winning run. They travel to Luton on Saturday, where only Sunderland have managed to avoid defeat.

But such is the spirit in Bowyer’s squad, it would be foolish to bet against them getting a result.
