Charlton have used seven players in central defence this season – Joe Gomez, Tal Ben Haim, Roger Johnson, Andre Bikey, Oguchi Onyewu, Michael Morrison and Alou Diarra.
Michael Morrison completed a permanent deal to Birmingham in January following a successful loan stint, and Johnson and Onyewu were signed on short term deals that expire in the summer.
Ben Haim is also out of contract at the end of the season, Gomez is on the wanted list of several Premier League teams, and though he recently penned a new deal, Diarra is essentially a holding midfield player.
Andre Bikey has been out of favour recently and it would be no surprise if he left the before the new season starts, so Guy Luzon has plenty to muse on about his defence for next season.
Warranted he is still at the club, Gomez will be the mainstay in central defence, the question is, who will be his partner?
Roger Johnson impressed when he arrived at the club, despite having not played for much of the season. A lot of games in a short space of time have caught up with Johnson somewhat of recent times, but the former Wolves man looks sure to be offered a deal for next season.
A major factor for Johnson’s recruitment was his leadership and organisational skills. They have been clear for all to see and his experience would be a great asset in Gomez’s development.
Ben Haim and Bikey were the rocks that Bob Peeters built his side around but questions have been asked of both recently.
Ben Haim is keen to stay at The Valley, despite stories linking him with a return to Israel during the January transfer window.
He is a player who likes to play the ball out of defence and Luzon may consider him to be too similar in style to Gomez.
Bikey is more of a no nonsense defender and he was hugely impressive in the early months of the season.
He has looked far more vulnerable since the turn of the year and Johnson has overtaken him in the pecking order. Both Bikey and the club may feel his future would be better served elsewhere.
Onyewu will be released in the summer.
Gomez, Johnson and possibly Ben Haim look to be the likely central defenders for the 2015/16 campaign with Diarra available to provide back up.
Dependent on the Ben Haim situation, Luzon may feel he still needs to bring in a centre-back or two before pre-season training begins.
