Thamesmead Town’s incredible December continued with a fifth win in fourteen days as Witham Town were beaten at Bayliss Avenue. Two up at half time through Paul Vines’ 16th goal of the season and Alex Teniola’s header, the Mead dominated the opening 45 minutes and
could have been ahead by more.
And when Green pulled one back for Witham shortly after the break, some alarm bells may have sounded, but Teniola’s cool finish for his
second and the Mead’s third eased the nerves – nerves that temporarily returned just before the hour when Osei bundled home Witham’s second just before the hour, only for skipper Scott Kinch to brilliantly steer home a header five minutes later to score the goal that ultimately sealed the points to make it fifteen out of fifteen since December 1st!
Teniola could have opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes as he saw his header from Ellis Green’s corner cleared off the line and
it was those two who effectively combined for Paul Vines’ opener on 16 minutes – Green hit the bar and Teniola saw his shot saved before
following up Vines scored his fourth in three games since returning from injury.
It was nearly two moments later as Green’s free kick was cleared off of the Mead’s top scorer by a defender only for the ball to bounce
wide of the right post with keeper Jeggo motionless. The Mead’s second wasn’t long though in coming as Teniola headed home superbly
from a free-kick for his fifth goal in this his tenth game for the club. It could have been six in ten before the break as Vines
deflected ball into the middle fell to his strike partner who somewhat snatched at the shot. He g’ot even closer on the stroke of half time
when the Witham defence were caught in possession by Bode Anidugbe and as Jeggo tried to clear the ball he hit it straight to Teniola. The
ball came at the Mead number 10 at an awkward height and sadly the ball flew wide of the unguarded net.
The second half had barely started when the visitors got an unexpected and possibly undeserved lifeline when Tom Wellham in the Mead goad couldn’t hold onto a skidding free kick and Green was on hand to prod the ball home. The Mead’s response though was magnificent and swift – a great ball from Ellis Green released Teniola who raced clear anddrilled the ball past the advancing Jeggo for that sixth goal in ten games.
Witham were then thrown a second lifeline when Wellham could only parry a shot straight to Osei who scored the open goal. The Mead
keeper redeemed himself though making a brilliant save to tip over the same player’s angled drive moments later as the visitors for possibly
the whole time in the game threatened.
A threat that didn’t last too long as just at the half’s midway point, the Mead skipper effectively sealed the points, as Kinch ghosted in to
meet a corner an flash his header into the net.
The victory margin could have been a lot greater as a couple of times only flailing defensive boots stopped balls into the box falling to
both Vines and then Teniola before Jeggo pulled off a smart stop to deny a Jay Porter drive, and when sub Tyrus Gordon-Young laid the ball
back, Porter’s second drive was blocked behind for a corner.
When he stated in his programme notes before the club’s last home game with Great Wakering Rovers on December 3rd that his side needed “a good December”, boss Tommy Warrilow couldn’t even have dreamed of winning the next five games – could he?
