Following two weeks without a game Welling United will be pleased to return to action when visiting Tamworth on Saturday.
It has been a frustrating time for Jamie Day and his management team as four Welling players on loan have spent half their spells kicking their heels. On a more positive note, players carrying knocks will have been grateful for the opportunity to rest.
During the unwanted winter break, the Wings manager has also had to replace Doug Bergqvist who accepted the offer of a full time opportunity in Sweden. Day moved quickly and has brought in Tom Bender on an emergency loan from Millwall until the end of the season.
In their last game, the Wings put in a thoroughly professional performance to see off Chester on a very successful away day. The Wings had looked good before Harry Cornick, one of the players brought in for a month, burst through to finish comfortably.
Another, Tobi Sho-Silva, was instrumental in the second when chasing down a back pass, tackling the hurried Chester goalkeeper then squaring for Ross Lafayette to finish. Joe Healy’s fourth goal in four games put the Wings well in command and Chester’s goal soon after was no more than a consolation.
On transfer deadline day, manager Jamie Day also recruited Toby Ajala following his release from Bristol City along with Alfie Mawson, on loan from Brentford for the rest of the season.
When Welling entertained Tamworth in October, the Wings were made to work for their 2-0 victory. Lee Clarke broke the deadlock after 63 minutes and Loick Pires, currently on loan at Whitehawk, made the game safe with eight minutes remaining. Former Gillingham full back and Welling loanee Jack Evans, now a Lambs player, sustained an injury that day but is now back in their team following a prolonged lay off.
Kiernan Hughes-Mason is also out on loan, at Hayes and Yeading United whilst Joe Obersteller has left the Wings for Whitehawk.
Tamworth were defeated at home by Salisbury City on Tuesday evening and will be keen to bounce back as they are now deep in relegation trouble so they will be expected to provide another stern challenge for the Wings.
