Tamworth 1-1 Welling United

Welling United had to settle for a point as they conceded a late equaliser in a game that was not easy on the eye.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

For the first hour or so, Welling were the better team but their failure to add to their half time lead proved costly.

Charlton Athletic loanee Tobi Sho-Silva was involved in most of Welling’s attacking moments and came close twice early on. First, he burst through but shot just wide of the post, then he saw his shot saved after combining well with strike partner Ross Lafayette.

Sho-Silva again came close when his header was deflected just wide then Jeff Mawson almost marked his debut with a goal when heading Jack Obersteller’s corner over the bar.

Lee Butcher was alert to save from Jordan Keane when the hosts registered their first shot on target but the Wings deserved to go ahead just before the break.

Great work by Harry Beautyman gave him the opportunity to ping in a low cross and although it went beyond Lafayette, Kurtis Guthrie controlled well before firing into the bottom corner.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Kerry was cautioned for a foul on Sho-Silva that stopped the Wings’ striker from bearing down on goal, although another referee might well have dismissed him for the cynical foul.

Eventually, Jack Obersteller took the free kick and Guthrie met it with a header against the crossbar.

Matty Godden, who had enjoyed a spell with Dartford earlier in the season, fired over before the striker, on loan from Scunthorpe, was thwarted by the legs of Butcher.

He was not to be denied, however, and equalised with six minutes remaining. A long, high free kick caused chaos in the Welling penalty area and when the ball was flicked in, he beat the offside trap to finish from close range.

Welling could have gone home empty handed had substitute Connor McLaren not cleared off the line deep into injury time but defeat would have been very harsh on the Wings.
