Sordell to leave The Valley

Marvin Sordell’s time at the Valley has not worked out how either the player or the club would have wanted.

The situation is not what Dougie Freedman or Bolton would have envisaged when they agreed to loan him to the Addicks for the season.

Bolton do have a recall clause which they can activate in January, but the player does not feature in Freedman’s plans at the Reebok. Sordell’s high wages are also a problem for the Trotters.

Signed from Watford for £3.2m in January 2012, when Bolton were still in the Premier League, Sordell has failed to settle in the north and Wanderers wanted to move him off the wage bill to fund the salary of Andre Moritz. Moritz has been an instant hit at the Reebok and is a crowd favourite.

Freedman has indicated that recalling Sordell in order to loan him to another club could be a possibility and had this to say to The Bolton News:

“I spoke to him (Sordell) a couple of weeks ago and he’s a little bit frustrated that he’s not in their(Charlton’s) team.

“Marvin needs to play. He’s at Charlton now and if someone came back in for him now then I’d have a look at it – I’m sure Marvin would too – but there hasn’t been anything just yet.

“He came to the club and never played, never got a run, that was hard on him.

“I gave him one or two games but he didn’t show on a regular basis what I thought he showed at Watford.

“I’ve told him he’s got to work at it because he is only young and it’s a huge plus for us that he doesn’t play because he genuinely has got goals in him,” said Freedman.

Chris Powell has already stated that he will have to be ‘creative’ in the January transfer window if he is to freshen things up at the Valley. The removal of Sordell from the wage bill would free up significant funds.

Powell will have Michael Smith back from AFC Wimbledon in January but it is unlikely that Smith will be vying for a regular starting place and a speedy return to the Dons is a distinct possibility.

It is likely that the two managers discussed Sordell at the Reebok after Saturday’s game and Powell may already have a replacement in mind.
