Vetokele leaves on loan

Igor Vetokele has joined Belgian club Zulte-Waregem on loan for the 2016/17 season.

The Belgian outfit have the option to make the deal permanent next summer.

Vetokele joined Charlton two years ago, and made a blistering start to his Valley career, scoring 8 goals in his first 13 Championship games.

The goals dried up, and the Angolan hit man was ravaged by injuries. Now 24-years-old, Vetokele made a total of 60 appearances in all competitions for the Addicks – 47 starts plus 13 as a substitute – scoring 13 goals.

Vetokele appeared to lose his edge after his long term Achilles and groin injuries. At his best, he was a potent threat in the Championship.

Another striker, Nicky Ajose, appears to be edging closer to a move to The Valley. The deal is expected to be completed in the early part of next week.

Ajose is likely to be joined by more new arrivals next week, as Russell Slade continues to build his squad for next season.

Vetokele named Player Of The Month

Igor Vetokele’s five goals in Charlton’s impressive start to the season, have seen the Angolan forward receive the Championship Player of the Month award.

Vetokele is currently away on international duty, Angola vist Gabon on Saturday and will entertain Bukina Faso on Wednesday.

Vetokele has hit the ground running at the Valley and his goals have been a major part of the Addicks’ success.

The club need cover for Vetokele and were hoping to bring in a striker before Monday’s transfer deadline but will now have to look to the loan market.

Charlton had agreed personal terms with Andy Delort, but not with his club, Tours. Delort eventually signed for Wigan on deadline day.

The coveted number nine shirt is currently vacant at The Valley. Last season’s incumbent, Simon Church, and Vetokele were keen to take the number but it was reserved for Delort. The question now is, who – if anyone – will get the shirt?

One player thought to be on the radar for a loan switch to the Addicks is Sunderland’s much travelled striker, Danny Graham.

The Gateshead born 29-year-old has made league appearances for Middlesbrough, Darlington, Derby, Leeds, Blackpool, Carlisle, Watford, Swansea, Sunderland and Hull.

Charlton were interested in Graham several years ago when he was at Carlisle, but he moved to Watford instead, where he enjoyed the best spell of his career, scoring 37goals in 91 league appearances.

He moved from Watford to Swansea, then returned to his native north east with a big money move to the Stadium Of Light.

For whatever reasons, Graham’s move to Sunderland has not worked out and he has so far failed to score for the Black Cats. He did have a loan spell with Hull last season and it may well be that the Championship is the level where Graham is at his most effective.

The South London Press are reporting that the club would be willing to let Michael Morrison go on a free transfer.

Morrison only penned a new deal in the summer but Tal Ben Haim and Andre Bikey are Bob Peeters’ preferred central defensive pairing.

Morrison and young Joe Gomez – who has been used at right-back so far – are the back-up options, so Peeters would need to bring in cover if Morrison leaves.

Whether he would initially go out on loan, or agree to have his contract cancelled so he could sign a permanent deal as a free agent, remains to be seen.

Peeters would probably prefer a more technical player than Morrison, who is a traditional no frills British defender.
