Sutton United v Gillingham preview

Gillingham could go top of the fledgling League Two table with another victory at Sutton United this evening.

Neil Harris’ side have come out of the blocks quickly in this new campaign having beaten Stockport County and Accrington Stanley in the league along with the demolition of Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

With six points from a possible six in the league, Gillingham go into tonight’s game full of confidence without having really hit top form, so that’s ominous for the clubs around them in the fourth tier.

For once, Neil Harris has an abundance of riches in which to choose from and at the weekend, his squad looked very strong on paper with the likes of Glenn Morris and Conor Masterson unable to even get off the bench.

The conundrum for Harris this evening is whether to change a starting line up that beat Accrington Stanley 1-0 at Priestfield at the weekend, but failed to take a number of chances in front of goal.

With Macauley Bonne having come off the bench at the weekend, but lacking both fitness and game time, Harris seems set to keep faith with the pairing of Tom Nichols and Ashley Nadesan up front whilst Oli Hawkins recovers from injury.

The back four looked solid on Saturday and Harris would surprise many if he changed a resolute line that looks to have formed a good understanding already.

The addition of Shadrach Ogie surprised many in pre-season and Masterson was expected to be partnering Max Ehmer at the heart of the Gillingham defence this season, but the former Leyton Orient man has shown he more than deserves his place in the side and seems to be a great piece of business for a Gills side going places.

Robbie McKenzie at right back and Scott Malone at left back didn’t look like the obvious choices in the starting eleven even just a few short weeks ago with Cheye Alexander and Max Clark seemingly in line to start the season, but McKenzie and Malone have more than proved their worth in a side that’s not conceded in the league yet this season.

Gillingham’s midfield again has an abundance of riches now in which to choose from and with Tim Dieng back available, Harris has to decide which four to go with as the Williams pairing (Shaun and Jonny) look to bring the stability with Dom Jefferies more than worth keeping his place in the side.

That means the likes of George Lapslie has to wait for a place to become available and will have to make do with cameo appearances from the bench for now.

Sutton United will be no pushover this evening and The Gills know they will be in for a tough test, but are expected to take a large following to one of the closest away games of the campaign.

Come 10pm this evening, with Gillingham be top of the league?
