Surbiton 4-0 Holcombe
Surbiton 4-0 Holcombe

Holcombe were beaten 4-0 by Surbiton at Sugden Road as they looked to bounce back from the previous weekend’s defeat to league leaders and champions Old Georgians which started their Premier Division Phase Two campaign.

In an even first quarter, it was the home team that took the lead on 16 minutes as England international Stuart Rushmere scored a field goal against his international compatriot Ollie Payne.

Five minutes into the second quarter, Struan Walker doubled the home side’s advantage with a superbly-finished field goal, striking the ball into the ground for it to loop over a beaten Payne.

This lead was increased further a minute before half time with a second field goal from Walker making the half time score 3-0.

Holcombe needed to draw on the experience of their opponents coming back from 4-2 down to scrape a draw in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, to pull off their own escape act however this was not to be the case and in the fourth quarter, Gareth Furlong wrapped up all three points and extinguished any hopes of a comeback when he converted from a penalty corner.

Fourth-placed Wimbledon won 3-0 at Oxted to leapfrog Holcombe into third.

Ed Horler broke the deadlock just after half-time following a cagey first two quarters before Fred Newbold and Liam Ansell added to the Londoners’ tally in the fourth quarter at Caterham School.

In the final Top Six clash, runaway leaders Old Georgians made it two Phase Two wins from two with a 4-2 victory over Hampstead & Westminster.

Former Holcombe player Sam Ward was on fire with all four goals including three from penalty corners.

The first quarter was goalless but five minutes into the second quarter, Ward opened the scoring with a field goal.

After half-time, Ward struck two penalty corner strikes into the Hampstead goal to complete his hat-trick.

This seemed to shock the home side into action and in the final quarter, a field goal by Josh Kelly reduced the deficit to two.

In the final minute of the game, Hampstead scored a second through Jake Glew, but it was Ward that then ensured the points were going back to Weybridge.

This result means that Ashley Jackson’s side are now seven points clear of Surbiton at the top.

In the Lower Six, Beeston took all three points at Bowdon as they won 4-2.

The Bees made the ideal start with a field goal on seven minutes from England and Great Britain international Henry Croft but were soon pegged back by Simon Egerton to leave the scores level at the first break.

Six minutes into the second quarter, Ollie Rogerson scored a field goal giving the home side a 2-1 lead as they looked to complete a double over Beeston.

In the third quarter, the away side started strongly, and their pressure told in the 42nd minute.

Joseph Paul levelled the scores with a field goal. Moving into the fourth quarter with the scores tied, it was Beeston that scored the fifth goal of the game on 57 minutes as Oliver Manson converted a penalty corner to give the away side the lead for the second time and with seven minutes remaining, the points were secured when Croft scored his second and Beeston’s fourth from a penalty stroke.

This result meant the Nottingham-based club move level with Cardiff & Met with a game-in-hand.

East Grinstead won 4-2 against Welsh side Cardiff & Met in Sussex.

Cardiff took the lead nine minutes in courtesy of a Scott Rawlings penalty stroke before Ioan Wall doubled the advantage six minutes before half-time.

The second Cardiff & Met goal seemed to wake up the hosts and three minutes before half time, Simon Faulkner converted his team’s own penalty stroke to halve the deficit.

East Grinstead came out strongly in the second half and in the 43rd minute, the scores were tied – Samuel Knight scored a field goal.

The hosts took the lead for the first time three minutes later with a field goal by Hugh Pembroke on 46 minutes.

Faulkner added his second and East Grinstead’s fourth from a penalty corner to put his side two goals to the good and secure the points, leaving them just a point behind Beeston, who they face on Sunday.

In the final Lower Six match Richmond drew 1-1 with Southgate.

It was the away side that took the lead at the beginning of the second quarter through Jack Middleton scoring a great field goal on 18 minutes but with seven minutes remaining, Scott Wall converted a penalty corner to ensure a share of the spoils for Richmond in this six-pointer.

The result means that Southgate move onto 10 points with Richmond on five points and Bowdon a further two points back.
