Summer championship shines

Sunday saw the sixth round of the BMKC summer championships, with heavy rain showers hitting the event midway through.Bayford Meadows - August

The Honda Cadet drivers started the day’s finals on a very greasy surface and it was last month’s winner, Owen Tolley who led the field of 16 drivers away. His lead only lasted a lap however as Tom Law took the position from him at the first corner at the start of lap2, with a fine move on his inside. Tolley slipped back into the pack a little later, after he felt he was tapped from behind into a spin.

This let Law manage to pull a little gap over the rest of the jostling  field, holding on to win by 1.6 seconds, behind him a great race featuring James Wharrier, Alfie Prince and Oliver Owen ended with the drivers finishing in those positions at the finish. Jack Davis finished 5th from Zak Ripley in 6th, Tolley eventually recovered to finish 8th.

Next up were the Mini Max drivers, only 7 made it out onto the track but as with last month the racing at the front was as close as ever. KPi driver Oliver Appleby flew off the start line to lead, opening up a good gap in the still slippery conditions over Freddy Simpson-Stacey and Ronnie Foster. As the race developed Foster in 3rd slowly started to reel Simpson-Stacey in, whom in turn was closing down on Appleby.Bayford Meadows - August 5

Foster pounced when the opportunity presented itself passing Simpson-Stacey and didn’t hesitate to repeat the feat on Appleby. At this stage the KPi driver was struggling and Simpson Stacey followed Foster through. They finished in these positions with Benjamin Boras taking 4th from Thomas Rotherham and a dejected Connor Garlick who lost touch with a spin late on.

The largest entry of the day for the Honda Clubman drivers was next, 18 drivers taking to the now slightly drying twisty Sittingbourne circuit. Two drivers made the race their own, pairing off to pull away from the rest, it was Alex Moody and last month’s victor Sebastian Bloch who leapt away. All race long the Ambition pilot Bloch, shadowed NR driver Moody and you sensed that he would save his move until the end.

At the end of the 11th and final lap it was a delighted Moody that held on to win, Bloch had tried everything to pass but it had been in vain and he threw back his head in disappointment at the finish line. On his own 5 seconds behind in third was Oliver Greenall, he was a further 3 seconds clear of a battling Mika Renzullo, Alfie Brooks and Callum Gunning in 4th, 5th and 6th.

The Junior Subarus always provide entertainment and this month’s race didn’t disappoint.  With the circuit still damp all but one driver chose to start on wet tyres. Max Goodwin dominated the pre-final and led away from pole position with Jenson Harvey and the rest of the 15 snarling Subaru powered drivers close behind. Bayford Meadows - August 4

After several laps Harvey found a way past Goodwin, who in turn looked content to follow him hoping to return the favour later in the race. A lively battle for third saw Dillan Lewis pushed back and it was John Victory who took the last podium spot behind Harvey who eventually won by a ‘comfortable’ 0.47 seconds from Goodwin. Kartik Sawhney took the 4th placed spot from Christopher Carleton and Thomas Lawson in 5th and 6th, Lewis taking a frustrated 7th. The one driver on slicks Troy Beswick took the fastest lap although his tyres came good too late in the race to have any effect on the outcome.

So a dry track surface greeted the Senior Rotax drivers and it was a very switched on Jonathan Wilkes who absolutely dominated the whole of the 14 lap final duration. Nearly 9 seconds behind was Max Read who held off Jack Wall for second place. Jonathan Harrison was 4th, Antonio Sagona 5th and James Pagden 6th.

The last final saw Harry Gent take a nearly 3 second win over the 11 drivers in the Junior Rotax class. Liam Carter had looked very quick in the wet qualifying race but had no answer for Gent’s speed in the dry. Both of these drivers gave their all for the whole of the 14laps, their concentration levels tested throughout.Bayford Meadows - August 3

Behind in third was the Junior Subaru final winner Jenson Harvey who led a very close group which at times contained some inevitable contact, but great racing. Once they had sorted themselves out, it was Sean Berry who finished behind Harvey in 4th, closely followed by Lewis Ridd and Callum Hopcutt in 5th and 6th.

The diminutive Bambino drivers completed their timed laps at three intervals during the day; Luke Haywood took the fastest time in sessions 1 &2 with Jaron Kiff taking the third session.
