Success for Sales in Holland

Jack Sales had one of his best weekends yet when the Catherham Roadsport Championship headed to Holland just a few weeks ago.Jack Sales

The youngster finished third in race one from the iconic circuit before following that up the following day with a second place in the final race of the weekend.

Kent Sports News caught up with Jack to get his exclusive thoughts following the weekend, he said: “I was hoping to be up the front, especially coming off the back of a win at Donington; but I certainly didn’t expect to go as well purely due to how competitive this year’s Caterham Roadsport championship is turning out to be.

“Before the weekend, I didn’t know what to expect, but after qualifying on pole my hopes for a podium certainly picked up! I got a reasonable start and ended the first lap in third. The front three decided not to battle and to try and get away, which is what we did in the first half of the race.

“I then made a move to get up to second and to try and chase down the leader, who was about a second in front. Unfortunately I locked the rears going into one of the chicanes and dropped back to third. The win was realistically out of reach by this point so it turned in to a big battle for second place!

“After much position swapping, I was beaten to third place, but only by 0.009 seconds! Despite losing out, I had great fun and it was a strong haul of points for the championship.”

The second race of the weekend got a lot better for Jack as he managed to battle and keep hold of that second place.

He added: “I am reasonably happy, although I am annoyed with myself. The track was wet to start with, and I got a great start and got the whole shot. Over the first laps, I had managed to eke out a small lead of between 0.5 and 1 second, until the safety car came out due to a fairly big crash (thankfully the drivers involved were ok).

“It took a while for the marshals to clear everything up, so the track had pretty much dried up during the safety car period (the sun came out shortly after the start of the race and was very strong) and there was only one lap left after the restart. I’m annoyed at myself because I didn’t defend into the first corner (thinking it was still slippery off line) and got pushed back into second and couldn’t get the lead back before the finish. A lesson learnt, for sure!”

The season now moves on to Rockingham and Jack is full of confidence that he can go that one better and finish on the top step.

“I’m going to be trying very hard to win at Rockingham! I’ve got very good memories of the place being where I took my first win last year so that gives me a little psychological boost going into the weekend; I can’t wait!”
