Ten man Welling United were again beaten at home with Truro City claiming the points. After the match, Rod Stringer spoke to the media.
“I thought we started quite well.” he said “We got a little bit of a deflection (for the goal) which was a little bit lady luck. We knew what we were going to face today. They’re relentless, a bit like Eastbourne, which is what this league is. Very strong, organised, relentless with long throws and set pieces. The centre halves look to keep putting balls in the right areas and making it difficult.”
“We knew it was going to be that. We haven’t quite got them players at the club so its very hard to go toe to toe, and try to win that battle so we played with Zain (Walker) and Longy (Elliot Long) behind Marts (Martell Taylor-Crossdale) today and I thought we did quite well.”
Defensively, Welling made two defensive errors and paid the price. Stringer confirmed “The biggest disappointment in the first half was the goals we conceded. It was a long throw in and someone’s not won the first contact. It’s gone in and somebody’s obviously not picked up their man.”
“It’s very difficult to know who it was and whose responsibility it was. It’s important to know because you have to correct these things and you can’t correct them if you can’t find out who’s made the mistake. Then the one there which, I thought was handball when they worked it but it was just poor.
“Take those two situations out and I thought the boys really worked hard for us in the second half. Obviously we lost Dave (Winfield) after five minutes (of the second half) which same again, back in the day you probably don’t get a second yellow for that.”
“You look at their players when their wrapped round the referee, they’ve made is mind up because every player was round the referee to send him off, which he did, but I’m proud of the way the boys dug deep to play the best part of forty-five minutes, including injury time, with ten men.”
“We didn’t concede and we were nicking one or two chances here and there. I thought the subs who came on, worked hard for us.”
“I thought the boys did show that endeavour.” he continued. “They never just dropped their heads and sat in. We kept trying to go on the front foot. You look at them (Truro). They’ve got a great budget.”
“They’re getting three thousand supporters at home in their new stadium. They’ll be there or thereabouts because they’re very organised. They’re so well drilled just to turn you around.”
Stringer gave a debut to goalkeeper Daniel Jinadu in the continued absence of Rhys Lovett. Stringer said: “I’ve had Daniel in goal today and I’ve just said to him, other than the one save that he saved just before they scored, which was a good save, he had nothing else to do other than pick the ball out of the net.”
“If we’d have got a draw out of this, especially in the second half, I don’t think that anybody could have said that we didn’t work hard enough for a draw, but we can’t cover up the fact that it’s another defeat and defeats all of a sudden start becoming a bit too familiar.”
