Daniel Martin scored the only goal as Welling United claimed three big points against Enfield Town. After the match, Welling United manager Rod Stringer gave his views to reporter Mark Doig.
He said “Looking in the first half, I thought we were totally in control of it, (it was) very disappointing that we didn’t come in three or four goals to the good.
“We played in there with Longy off the two strikers which really worked well but we made so much hard work of it today. We’ve had the penalty that’s been missed and then we’ve had a second yellow for a sending off that was right in front of my dugout and all he’s done is just won the ball.”
He continued “First half really pleased, the second half really pleased as the boys have had to really dig deep. The penalty does affect you because I think two nil up, it’s a very different ball game. I fancy that if we go two nil up, we probably go on and win this three or four nil.
“When we had even numbers before Alex Lankshear got sent off I thought we were really solid and even with ten men we still could have scored the second. I feel for the boys because they have had to work so hard to cling on to what was, in the end, a tough three points.
“If you ever want to know if they are running for the Welling shirt, it was there to see over the last two games. I thought they were very good Saturday (at St. Albans City) and now we’re getting a few back, I think they looked very good tonight.”
Players are coming back from injury and that also pleased Stringer. “If you look at the bench, I think it was quite strong. If we can get (new signing) Josh (Redfearn) working with the other two forwards, looking at that bench tonight, I wanted to put another one or two on but the game was so nip and tuck that I just thought that another substitution could work or go against us.”
Overall, Stringer was delighted with back to back clean sheets in which goalkeeper Rhys Lovett has only had to make one real save, an outstanding one in the second half against Enfield. “Wow, what a save” said Stringer. “He pulled off a great save.
“We’ve had to overwork tonight because we haven’t put the ball in the net. We needed the second to really give us a good chance to secure the points but we had to punch our way right to the end. That’s quite exhausting on everybody. Defensively, we’ve got a bit about us, Midfield we’ve got energy, wide players have got creativeness, and the strikers can be a handful. We just need to find the net.”
