Maidstone United’s date with destiny is here and history will be made as they take on Stevenage in the First Round of the FA Cup tonight.
Arguably their biggest game of the season, Jay Saunders’ side will be live on BT Sports as they go head to head with the League Two side for a place in the Second Round of the oldest cup competition in the world.
With Wrexham away awaiting the winners, the eyes will be on the prize for the Stones as they look to upset the odds and book their place in the next round.
History will be made at The Gallagher Stadium as it will be the first ever FA Cup 1st Round match to be played on a 3G surface with the Stones hoping that gives them an advantage after the two sides played out a goalless draw at the Lamex Stadium eleven days ago.
The likes of Frannie Collin, Lee Worgan and Alex Flisher could all become household names by the end of the evening should they manage to secure victory in front of a packed house.
With so much to play for, defender Sonny Miles is hoping his side give a good account of themselves on the TV, but doesn’t feel the game will be much different to any other:
“I don’t think of the game as being any different even though its being televised but maybe when we arrive at the game and see the cameras then that might change.”
“As with the first game, it is important that we don’t concede an early goal as they have a lot of quality in their squad which they could use to pick us apart. We are confident though and as always, there is a really good team spirit at the moment.”
“Everyone behind the scenes at the club has also been working hard and I hope the match provides the chance to show everyone how good our 3G surface is.”
Stevenage come to Maidstone as clear favourites and have former Gillingham midfielders Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale in their squad, but that won’t count for much on the night.
With a lot of talk around the 3G surface ahead of the game and Stevenage manager Graham Westley having been critical of it, it’ll be interesting to see whether it is used as an excuse after the event.
Anyone up for a cup upset?
