Gillingham face a tricky away tie at Stockport County this evening as they look to cement their League Two status.
Neil Harris takes his troops north once again after Saturday’s goalless draw at Harrogate Town knowing a point on the road would be a good return.
However, it will be no easy task for a resurgent Gillingham side as County are pushing for promotion and at home are a formidable force.
Both Dom Jefferies and Robbie McKenzie missed the game at the weekend and their experience was missed, although the depth of Harris’ squad is starting to show with more options now available to the Gillingham manager.
If the pair are still missing tonight, Harris may be tempted to stick with the same eleven that started at Harrogate.
The clean sheet in Yorkshire left the Gills boss pleased as he opted for a front three, but they lacked midfield dominance and will find Stockport an even harder side to break down.
Whatever the outcome tonight, Gillingham will go into these final few months of the season knowing they most likely have more than enough to avoid the drop into non league.
Under Brad Galinson’s new ownership, The Gills have got a squad capable of securing their League Two status and plans are already advanced for their summer plans and rebuilding.
A number of the current squad are playing for their places and Harris will be hoping that he can get the best out of them between now and the end of the campaign.
Undoubtedly the addition of the likes of Tim Dieng and Tom Nichols have brought more experience and quality to the squad and Harris will be hoping both Kenny Jackett and Andy Hessenthaler can bring more players of this ilk into the club once this campaign is over.
Building for the future and a promotion push next season has to be the ultimate goal, but Gillingham have to keep one eye on the here and now, making sure they pick up enough points between now and the end of the campaign to ensure their Football League status.
