The impression most fans had at the end of last week was that time ran out just before Guy Luzon’s work permit application could be completed.
It seemed as though the formalities would be finalised at the beginning of this week.
As Thursday dawns, there is still no sign of the permit and no word from the club about the current situation.
Some people have questioned whether Luzon meets the criteria to obtain the necessary permit and the longer the situation drags on, the stronger those theories become.
There now has to be real doubt about whether Luzon will be able to take charge at Wolverhampton on Saturday.
The scenario is hardly conducive to creating the stability the club so badly needs right now. It is further complicated by a number of players having issues with Luzon from his time at Standard Liege.
Resolution is needed as a matter of urgency.
There were rumours in the national press on Thursday linking the Addicks with a move for Wigan striker Marc-Antoine Fortune.
The 33-year-old has played for West Brom, Celtic and Doncaster Rovers, as well as current club, Wigan.
He is the type of strong, powerful front man that Charlton currently lack. Fortune is not a prolific scorer but he would be an ideal partner for Igor Vetokele or Tony Watt.
Some papers suggested the deal would be completed quickly, whilst others said the Addicks face competition from Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich for Fortune’s signature.
Fulham opened up a three point gap over Charlton after beating Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening.
Brighton moved to within two points of the Addicks when they surprisingly beat Ipswich by the same score at the Amex.
Both Fulham and Brighton have now played one more game than the Addicks.
