Stevenage 1-2 Charlton Athletic

Charlton notched a fourth consecutive win at Stevenage on Saturday afternoon.

Boro have title aspirations and held Championship side Norwich to a draw in their last outing, so they were always likely to give the Addicks a stern test.

Karl Robinson welcomed Chris Solly, Jason Pearce, Ahmed Kashi, Lee Novak, Tariqe Fosu back to his starting line-up.

The manger gave a rousing speech in the dressing room ahead of the game, and left his players in no doubt that it was to be treated as a serious match.

The match was played in torrential rain thoughout, but the Addicks acquiited themselves well. Apart from a 15 minute spell after they scored their second goal, Robinson’s side dominated the match.

Stevenage took the lead against the run of play, ten minutes before the interval. A corner from the left was headed out as far as Fraser Franks, who shot through a crowd of players into the bottom left hand corner of Phillips’ net.

Boro’s joy was short lived though. Five minutes later, Novak’s effort was brilliantly kept out by Joe Fryer, but the rebound‎ fell kindly for substitute, Karlan Ahearne-Grant, to slot home.

Jake Forster-Caskey bundled home the winner after 56 minutes when Pearce headed on a left-wing corner.

The rugged defender injured his shoulder in the build up to the goal, and needed lengthy treatment before being given the all clear to carry on.

Ricky Holmes also needed treatment to his shin in the first-half after a poor challenge by Rowan Liburd.

More worryingly, Mark Marshall had to be replaced just before the half-hour mark. The winger later left the ground on crutches and was wearing a knee brace.

Charlton created plenty of chances, an‎d struck the woodwork twice.

Novak hit the bar from a right wing corner in the first-half, and ‎Josh Magennis hit the post three minutes from time, after being played in by Ahearne-Grant.

Magennis had a golden opportunity at the death, but he headed Cameron Stewart’s peach of a cross straight at Chris Day.

Fosu looked lively, and Robinson will be pleased with his team’s performance.
