Steele returns to race in F3 Cup

Aaron Steele will make a return to the F3 Cup championship for the next two races at the famous Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

The 23-year-old driver from Kent was the star of last year’s F3 Cup, winning 14 of the 18 on the way to securing the prize FIA Formula Two test drive last November. Now he returns on 15-17 June, driving for Omicron Motorsport to take on the current crop of F3 Cup drivers, all of whom are vying to be crowned the first champion.

Steele will drive a Dallara F304 previously raced by Tony Bishop in 2011 which will be prepared by Norwich-based team Omicron Motorsport.

The event will be Steele’s first since competing at the prestigious Daytona International Speedway in January, which was a reward for winning the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge, as a result of his dominant display in the 2011 F3 Cup. Aaron will also be giving advice and coaching to Omicron’s existing driver line up of Bishop and Tristan Cliffe.

Steele said: “I’m really excited to be coming back to the F3 Cup and looking forward to be back racing again as I haven’t raced since my drive at Daytona in January. The opportunity came about through Omicron Motorsport’s Tony Bishop and driving an F3 car at Spa was too good an opportunity to turn down.

“I just want to get out there racing again. I’m really hungry to be racing an F3 car again and I’ve got a real burning ambition to do well at Spa.”

The Rochester man’s F3 Cup return will see him visit the location of his self described greatest career win when he triumphed against the stars of the Austrian F3 Cup last season. Despite a lack of race time this season, he hopes to pick up where he left off in Belgium.

He said: “I still get excited when I think about that race at Spa last year so I’m hoping I can produce a repeat performance. I haven’t raced since January so I will need a bit of time to shake off a bit of rust but I’m feeling good about it.”

Omicron Motorsport’s Tristan Cliffe said: “The addition of Aaron into our team is very exciting for us. I‘m sure he will make an immediate impact at Spa and even if this is his only race with us he will leave a legacy.”
