A ruthless second half blast from the Ravens saw Bromley return from Staines not only six nil victors but also with the bragging rights of first place in the Conference South.
With Staines having won only five games all season and Bromley looking in fine fettle having defeated promotion rivals Basingstoke and Havant and Waterlooville in their last two league games, the form book suggested Staines would have their work cut out.
Within ten minutes this was proved to be the case when captain Rob Swaine opened the scoring for the Ravens, an Anthony Cook corner was met by the towering Swaine and his firm header was parried back into his path by Staines custodian Jack Turner only for a gleeful Swaine to slot the ball past Turner to give Bromley the lead.
The opening goal seemed to sap any confidence Staines had and it was no surprise when Bromley scored a second in the twenty-fifth minute. A cross by Ugo Udoji was ineptly dealt with by Chris M’Boungou, in the penalty area, and Bradley Goldberg was on hand to smash in the loose ball to get his first goal on his return to the club.
With the Staines defence having lost its shape and any semblance of organisation the remainder of the first half resembled a training match of attack vs defence with Bromley failing to take two golden opportunities following two Reece Prestedge corners. First Swaine and then Ben May put far post headers over the bar when it seemed easier to score.
Although Bromley were fully in control at half-time no one could have forseen what was to happen in the opening six minutes of the second half. Four quick fire Bromley goals ended the game as a contest and ensured Bromley ended the day at the top of the Conference South.
Barely 45 seconds into the restart and more inept Staines defending presented Ben May with the simplest of chances to make it three nil to Bromley. An Udoji cross was miscued by Erivaldo Felix into the path of May who made no mistake with a firm drive into the net.
Two minutes later a Moses Ademola’s cross was flicked on by Ben May and Prestedge ghosted in at the back post, totally unmarked, to sneak in a fourth goal for the rampaging Ravens.
The body language of the Staines team suggested they wanted the game to end there and then, thus it was no surprise when a minute later a solo run from Goldberg resulted in a 25 yard screamer that left Turner no chance and put Bromley five goals to the good.
With no Bromley fan daring to turn away from the action in case they missed another goal, Goldberg duly obliged with his hat-trick goal a minute later. Ademola fed a ball through for Goldberg who calmly steered the ball low across Turner into the far corner to send the away fans into raptures.
With the scoreline standing at six nil and only 51 minutes of the contest gone thoughts turned to how many Bromley could rack up by full time but a combination of wayward finishing, poor decision making and contentious decisions ensured no more goals were added to the scoreline.
Goldberg thought he had scored his fourth in the 58th minute, excellent wing play from Ademola saw him leave one Staines defender on the floor before waltzing past another two, his cross was headed back across goal by Goldberg only for a falling Turner to palm the header away. To most it looked like the header had clearly cross the line but the referee’s assistant failed to raise his flag.
Anthony Cook was the next to go close for the Ravens when he profited from excellent one touch build-up between 5 Bromley players, only to see his curling effort from the edge of the box go inches wide.
Staines finally fashioned their first genuine chance of the game in the 84th minute when Ashley Lodge narrowly failed to reach a cross across the box with the goal at his mercy.
However that was to be as good as it got for Staines as Bromley comfortably saw out the remainder of the game to end the day in first place and further deepen Staines’ relegation woes.
