St Albans City v Welling United preview

On Saturday, Welling United are on the road when they travel to St. Albans City in a Vanarama National League South fixture.

Two wins and a draw in their last four matches have all but ensured that they won’t finish the season looking nervously over their shoulder at the drop zone.

Easter can often make or break a season and it was a successful spell for Warren Feeney’s side. They claimed a point in an uneventful match at Dover Athletic before denting Eastbourne Borough’s play-off hopes on Easter Monday.

Clean sheets for the Wings in both games were pivotal meaning that they only needed Christie Pattisson’s well hit twenty-five yard shot to defeat the Sussex side. That took them to nine points clear of the bottom four with four to play.

After the Eastbourne game Warren Feeney said: “We probably had the best chances of the game. We had a game plan to press them when they tried to play out from the back and our front three and midfield were absolutely outstanding.

“They’ve got good footballers in their team and they’re just outside the play-offs on merit but we knew that we could go and get about them and that’s just what we did. It was fully deserved.”

They will want to follow that up with another good showing but will be aware that St. Albans will provide a tough challenge. The Saints are sixth in the table and will have been pleased with Welling’s win over play-off rivals Eastbourne.

Their Easter yielded three points from a home defeat against Braintree Town followed by a two-one win at Concord Rangers.

Back in mid-October, the Saints claimed a comfortable win at Park View Road. Shaun Jeffers opened the scoring on the half hour mark, and Zane Banton added a second three minutes before the break. They had to wait until the final minute for Jeffers to add his second, and the visitors’ third.

Last season’s game at Clarence Park was an even bigger victory for St. Albans. It took just twelve minutes for Jeffers to complete a hat-trick. Romeo Akinola then helped himself to a second half brace.

Feeney will be without Amadou Kassarate, still suspended, and it’s unlikely that Taylor Maloney will be back. Sadik Balarabe and Chi Ezennolim have also been out injured and several players are carrying knocks so he will monitor the situation closely before he selects his squad.

Feeney confirmed: “We’ve got a lot of injuries at the minute.

“We’ve got players coming back who probably aren’t up to speed so you’re moving around players, hopefully trying to get them involved, but it’s a team game. They’re honest boys. I’ll back them over anyone.”
