Welling United’s unbeaten league run came to an end at St. Albans City.
They had an early shock when Khale Da Costa hit the cross bar after Ben Herd had cut through the Welling defence.
Montel Agyemang fired over for Welling before St Albans went ahead. Solomon Sambou sent Da Costa clear and he gave Dan Wilks no chance when firing into the bottom corner.
Bradley Goldberg had a shot saved by Dean Snedker before the Saints again cut through Welling’s back four. Da Costa was the creator this time, sending David Moyo through but the Wilks go down well to make a good save.
Goldberg brought a diving save out of Snedker before the goalkeeper had a lucky escape when he turned a Jordan Gibbons low cross onto his own post and out for a corner.
Patient Welling passing stretched the St. Albans midfield but the defence stood firm and Goldberg’s shot was deflected wide.
Dave Diedhiou headed just wide for the hosts and Thierry Audel did likewise at the other end as the first half drew to a close.
Just as they did in the first half, St. Albans started the second period strongly and Wilks made a great save from Clovis Kamdjo’s header. Then Sambou shot just wide as they looked for the important second goal.
Moyo headed wide before the hosts had an escape. Audel’s header hit Lewis Knight and it wrong-footed Snedker in goal but it rolled just the wrong side of the post as far as Welling were concerned.
That proved decisive as the Saints scored with their next attack. Tom Bender fired in a deep cross and Moyo got on the end of it to finish well.
Manager Steve King reacted by making a triple substitution and to their credit Welling tried to claw their way back into the game. Gibbons fired over from a Danny Mills knock down and Audel showed tremendous technique to curl an effort just wide.
Flying Frenchman Nassim L’Ghoul left Bender in his wake but Matt Patterson could only flash his pull-back over.
L’Ghoul continued to torment the defence and spun and shot over but as the Wings attacked they left gaps at the back and Moyo had a shot deflected wide before Kamdjo should have done better but shot wide when sent through by Samdou.
Snedker made a comfortable save from a L’Ghoul free kick and then had to make a harder one from the same player as the game drew to a close.
Although their unbeaten run has finished, Welling entertain Wealdstone on Saturday looking to start their next one.
