After Welling lost at home to Wealdstone ending their run of six wins, manager Jamie Coyle wanted his team to bounce back and that’s just what he got at Clarence Park.
Connor Dymond returned having completed his suspension but bans for Ben Jefford and Jack Parkinson ruled them out. Ian Gayle returned to a centre back position and Archie Johnson was given his first start of the season.
In the first half, the teams cancelled each other out and there were few clear cut chances. Christian Nanetti for Welling and the Saints’ Shaun Lucien were both off target before Bradley Goldberg had an effort well saved by Dean Snedker.
Layne Eadie then lost his man and fired a shot against the near post.
Jack Jebb shot over after an initial shot was half cleared then Goldberg’s shot hit a defender and went wide.
Gayle missed a good chance from a Jebb corner before Solomon Sambou had two shots from distance. The first was saved and the next went wide.
Dillon Barnes, Welling’s goalkeeper, made another decent save from Charlie Walker before Jeffrey Monakana’s goalbound shot was knocked out for a corner by David Noble. Jebb’s delivery again found Gayle but his header hit a defender on the line and came out.
One minute before the break, Welling went ahead. Goldberg found Joe Healy and he picked his spot from the edge of the area and curled home.
Immediately after the break, Welling came close again. Connor Dymond sent Monakana away whose low driven cross evaded Goldberg and the angle was too tight for Nanetti to finish.
Goldberg was close twice more before being replaced by Eli Phipps.
On 66 minutes, Welling gave themselves some breathing space when Healy played Jebb in and the midfielder finished clinically.
Phipps, was then thwarted by the feet of Snedker before Barnes made a point blank range save from Nathaniel Pinney.
Johnson created another opening with a low cross that Phipps touched only to see Snedker produce another fine save.
At the other end, Barnes made another great save, this time from former Wing Rhys Murrell-Williamson.
When Snedker was caught out of position, Monakana tried his luck and the keeper had to scurry back to tip over.
Two minutes into injury time Pinney headed home from Sam Merson’s cross but the Saints were unable to mount another attack and Welling claimed all three points.
