Kent will be looking to continue their good form in this season’s YB40 competition as they take on Worcestershire at New Road on Sunday.
Kent currently sit in third place in Group A, with five wins from their eight matches so far in the competition. They overcame tomorrow’s opponents in this competition in a tightly-contested fixture back in May, when skipper James Tredwell hit an unbeaten 42 to see his side home by three wickets, Kent having slipped to 45-6 chasing 111 to win in a game reduced to 25 overs per side.
Matt Coles also took 4-20 in that game at Canterbury, and is named in a 12-man squad which also includes Fabian Cowdrey, the 20-year-old batting all-rounder, off the back of his impressive T20 form, including scores of 40, 50 and 28 not out.
Kent saw out a draw with their opponents in a rain-hit County Championship encounter at New Road last week. Ben Harmison (96) and Darren Stevens (95) were the stand-out performers in that game along with Tredwell (5-51) as the weather removed any chance of either team picking up a win. Kent had got themselves into a strong position, however, having posted 324 in their first innings, with Worcestershire at 284-8 in theirs when rain brought an end to proceedings.
Darren Stevens is an unsurprising inclusion in the squad for tomorrow’s game too, vital as ever for Kent in all forms of the game this season, not least in their YB40 encounter with Sussex in June, in which they chased a world record 337 to win an astonishing game under the lights at Canterbury, largely thanks to Stevens’ knock of 118 from 53 balls.
Kent will head on to Northamptonshire for another YB40 encounter on Tuesday, before returning to Canterbury to take on Warwickshire on Thursday evening.
