Kent’s Mike Conway will resume his 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing this weekend as the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps sets the scene for round three and is the last race before the Centenary edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
Mike Conway and the #7 GR010 HYBRID team go into next Saturday’s race sitting third in the Championship standings, 13 points behind the leaders. The team got their WEC campaign off to the perfect start by claiming an opening round victory in Sebring, before a misfortunate P9 finish in Portimão after race officials ordered the car to return to the pit for a driveshaft sensor to be changed when battling for the lead.
The iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit has previously been a happy hunting ground for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, with the team recording seven wins in its previous ten WEC races at the venue. Last year’s race saw the #7 GR010 HYBRID claim victory to maintain TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s unbeaten record at the circuit in the Hypercar era. Mike will no doubt be hoping for a repeat performance this weekend.
The circuit, which is 7.004km in length, often falls victim to unpredictable weather. It features a number of exhilarating high speed corners which push the drivers to the limit, such as the Eau Rouge and Raidillon combination, making it a firm favourite among drivers and fans alike.
Speaking ahead of the weekend, Conway said: “Spa is always a good event, I love the place. We will go in there with confidence but there are still a lot of unknowns so early in the season.
“I am sure we have the potential for another strong result there but there are more Hypercars than ever on the grid. In terms of our competition, we are approaching things on a race-by-race basis because things can change rapidly.
“This is the final race before the big one, so it’s important that we leave Spa with a good result and plenty of confidence going into Le Mans.”
