On Saturday, Welling United face the first of three consecutive Saturdays in the North West of England when travelling to Southport.
Haig Avenue hosted league football between 1921 and 1978 until Southport became the last club to voted out to before automatic promotion and relegation. Wigan Athletic replaced them in League Division Four.
Welling will be hoping to put a halt to their two game losing streak but will be aware that Southport have won all three of their home games so far this season. However, Wings manager Jamie Day will also know that the Sandgrounders were beaten 4-1 at Tamworth last Saturday.
Day will have to make do without Kiernan Hughes-Mason who suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury in Welling’s recent Kent Senior Cup tie with Dartford. He will also be missing Harry Beautyman who is recovering from the injury he incurred at Woking.
Better news for the Welling manager came with the return of Loui Fazakerley and Kurtis Guthrie off the bench last Saturday. Fazakerley marked his come back with a goal and it would appear that the Wings will have competition for starting places almost for the first time this season.
Travelling Welling supporters may wish to allow themselves extra travelling time as the match coincides with the Southport annual air show as the Wings hope to soar to victory in the renamed Merseyrail Community Stadium.
